During the Heian period, Japan had a system of dispatching personnel to the Tang Dynasty in China, and various cultures and technologies were introduced to Japan from the continent. One of these missions was Kobo Daishi (Kukai), known as the founder of Shingon Buddhism, who brought bronze castings of Buddhist statues and altar implements along with esoteric Buddhism, in other words, the cutting-edge wax casting method at the time.
The skilled craftsmen known as "On-Imono-shi," who had mastered advanced casting techniques, founded the casting technology group "Denrai."
Among them, the title of "Denrai" was passed down to the top apprentice recognized for their exceptional skill, forming the foundation of today’s Denrai Kobo.
